Episode 64: Number 17 and Number 18! The Androids Awaken!

This is one of those episodes without a recap, instead beginning with the plot already in progress. After Krillin finds Dr. Gero’s lab and see’s the Doctor enter, he yells…

And then the episode starts…

The androids are now awake. 17 and 18 trick the Dr. into thinking they’re obedient and the Doctor calls out an order to them….

Meanwhile, Krillin called the others to the labs site. As the others rush towards the lab, Krillin tells them he’s already in there. Piccolo yells…

As the others pound on the door to the lab, Dr. Gero says…

#17 then the snatches the device to shut them down from Dr. Gero. #17 then says…

Outside the lab, Vegeta tells Piccolo to leave the androids alone. But Trunks tells Piccolo to just destroy them while he can. Vegeta then yells to Trunks…

After the androids mock the Doctor a bit, Dr. Gero shouts his orders again to destroy Goku’s friends. #17 says to him…

The Doctor thinks to himself…

After learning about a mysterious Android #16, Android #17 and #18 are eager to awaken it. Dr. Gero yells to them not too. As they are arguing back and forth, Krillin suggest they retreat while the androids are distracted. Vegeta says you might as well…

The androids continue to argue. #17 decides to put an end to it and impales the Doctor in the chest with his hand. This whole scene was edited out…

#17 then finishes the job by kicking the Dr’s head right off his body! This was edited with a flash screen but since we see the Doctor’s head come off in a typical slow motion for dramatic effect shot, it would have been too long for a flash screen. So, they just omitted it.

Just a little side note here: you can see the hole in Dr. Gero’s chest before #17 kicks his head off on Nicktoons even though they took the scene out…

With the Doctor gone, the androids go to awaken #16 but Trunks shoots a huge blast destroying the lab. After the smoke clears we see it had almost no effect on the androids. #17 and #18 then successfully awaken #16. They then decide their next move. #17 says they should just go look for Goku and mentions to #16…

The three androids fly off to look for Goku. Everyone is confused because they aren’t heading toward the city like Trunks said they would. Krillin then yells to the others they’re heading to Goku’s house because he took down the Red Ribbon Army. Tien then says…

Vegeta says “who cares” and powers up to ready himself to catch up to the androids and fight them. Trunks flies in front of Vegeta and tries to convince him not to fight the androids alone. Trunks yells…

Vegeta punches Trunks and flies off to fight the androids. Eventually he catches up to them in the middle of a road on a mountain. Vegeta asks the androids what their purpose is. They tell him to find Goku…

Vegeta then declares he’ll destroy them all right now! #17 says Vegeta is pretty cocky, and then continues…

Enraged, Vegeta asks who’s first? “You, boy? Or you?” then adds…

#18 then says to him…

After #16 declines to fight, #18 steps up. The episode ends soon after.

Bonus Tidbit! Original Air Date Backstory!

This episode originally aired (in the USA) on Nicktoons on May 30th 2011. It was Memorial Day Monday and Nicktoons played a marathon of 11 hours of Dragon Ball Z Kai. It was part of a summer kick-off type of events called “Nicktoons Summer Blast Off”.

The last episode in the marathon was a new episode, this episode. It was also the first new episode to air with the Shunsuke Kikuchi replacement music. At the time, Toonzai was already airing their new episodes with the replacement music, so we knew it was only a matter of time until Nicktoons followed. After this, every repeat on Nicktoons also had the Shunsuke Kikuchi replacement music.
